Things to Know When Buying a Computer

By Barb Diddle

You need to decide if you want a personal computer for home use and entertainment to keep in touch with friends and family, view movies and do general emails or will you need it for gaming? Gaming PCs are more expensive than a regular pc.

The next item to think about is whether you will purchase a laptop or desktop. A desktop is not as economical as laptops. Before making a decision you evaluate the following:

Laptops usually have two different screen sizes to choose from. 15.6" or 17" screens. The smaller screen is good for traveling and will make the laptop lighter. Purchasing a desktop you can have multiple screens and have a large selection of screen sizes.

Battery Power- You will want to check how many hours your laptop can run on just batter power.

Processors- Make sure to purchase a good processor with your machine. You don't want to buy a budget machine and end up with a substandard processor. You also want to know how fast the processor is.

Memory-(RAM) which stands for Random Access Memory is the working memory for your machine. This is the second biggest factor in the speed of your computer. Your computer uses RAM to process programs and information. Start with at least 4GB of RAM.

Hard Drives- Make sure you purchase a large GB for your new computer. Your hard drive is where your computer stores all of the programs and data for your machine.

The next decision is whether you want to purchase a PC which uses Microsoft interface or Apple. Graphic designers, artists and photographers usually prefer Apple due to the different interface and features. If you don't need special features that an apple uses you should be able to go with a PC that uses Microsoft.

If you decide on a PC, I would recommend that you check out the HP Envy line. They are great machines and come in different screen sizes. You can also get one with 3D. The Envy line also comes with the Beats Audio system which allows you to amplify the sound without external speakers. These machines come with six built in speakers and has integrated HP wireless audio.

As you can see, there are a lot of options to consider before heading out to the store to purchase a new computer. Spend some time reviewing all of the options before you purchase. This will keep you from having buyer's remorse after the purchase.
